A Belgian’s Journey of Resilience and Gratitude; would have been my title for today's blog.

Recently, I had the privilege of meeting a 66-year-old Belgian man who shared with me the poignant story of his life. His tale is one of love, hardship, and resilience—a narrative that has deeply resonated with me and offered profound insights into the nature of suffering and gratitude.

This gentleman, far from his homeland, found love in the Philippines and married a Cebuana woman. Their union is a testament to the beautiful merging of cultures and hearts. Yet, beneath the surface of their love story lies a reality marked by significant challenges. One of the most heart-wrenching aspects of his life is the realization that, due to various hardships, they cannot have children. This is a sorrow that lingers, a silent ache that colors their daily lives.

In sharing his story, he spoke candidly about the necessity of working despite his age. The work is hard, the hours long, but it is an essential part of their survival. Like many Filipinos who labor tirelessly to support their families, he too must earn a living to secure a future for himself and his wife. His narrative shatters the illusion that foreigners lead trouble-free lives; it reveals that everyone, regardless of their origin, faces their own battles.

Life, he told me, is not uniquely unfair to any one group of people. Many Filipinos might feel that their struggles are unparalleled, that they alone bear the brunt of life’s challenges. However, his story is a powerful reminder that sorrow and hardship are universal. Foreigners in a foreign land grapple with their own set of difficulties—loneliness, cultural adjustment, financial strain, and the emotional toll of being away from home.

Listening to him, I was struck by his unwavering gratitude. Despite the adversity, he holds onto a sense of thankfulness for the life he has. He finds solace in the love of his wife, the small joys of daily life, and the strength to keep going. His perspective is a lesson in resilience and gratitude.

This encounter has reminded me of the importance of appreciating what we have, no matter how modest it may seem. It’s easy to fall into the trap of envying others, believing that their lives are free from the burdens we carry. But the truth is, everyone has their own struggles, often hidden from view. Life’s challenges are a shared human experience, not confined to any one group or individual.

Gratitude doesn’t negate the difficulties we face, but it does offer a way to cope with them. It allows us to see the beauty in our lives, even amidst the pain. Cebu’s 4 Heroes: A Legacy of Courage and Patriotism

 Cebu is home to some of the most significant heroes in Philippine history, whose bravery and sacrifices shaped the nation’s fight for freedom.

1. Lapu-Lapu – The First Hero of the Philippines, who led the resistance against Ferdinand Magellan
   in the Battle of Mactan in 1521, symbolizing the Filipino spirit of independence and defiance against colonization.

2. 
   Leon Kilat – A prominent figure in the Philippine Revolution, Leon Kilat (Pantaleón Villegas) organized and led the uprising in Cebu during the revolution against Spain. His leadership in the Battle of Tres de Abril in 1898 ignited hope for freedom among Cebuanos, despite his tragic death in Carcar. 
   

3. Arcadio Maxílom – A revered revolutionary and teacher from Tuburan, Maxílom was instrumental in the fight against Spanish and later American colonization. As the last Cebuano revolutionary to surrender to the Americans, his defiance extended the fight for liberty.

4. Potenciano Aliño – Along with his brothers, Potenciano played a vital role in the Cebu revolution, resisting Spanish rule. Their revolutionary actions in Talisay City emphasized the role of family in the broader fight for independence.

How Should Cebuanos Feel?

If you’ve visited Tops recently, you’ve probably noticed a drastic change from what it used to be. Once a tranquil escape where you could bask in Cebu's breathtaking views, it's now heavily commercialized. While some may appreciate the modern updates, for those of us who cherished its simpler charm, it feels like a piece of the old Tops is lost.

The natural ambiance that once made it a peaceful retreat is now overshadowed by the bustling crowds and numerous commercial spots vying for attention. What was once a quiet place to reflect and take in the skyline is now almost too crowded to enjoy. And despite the influx of tourists, there's surprisingly little to see or do beyond the view itself.

It's not just the crowd that has changed but also the vibe. The serene atmosphere that made the drive up to Tops worth it seems like a thing of the past. Now, it feels more like a tourist trap, and while it's still worth visiting for first-timers, for those who experienced it in its more humble days, it's hard not to feel a bit nostalgic. Unfortunately, it's become a little overrated.

In short, while Tops still offers beautiful views, it no longer feels like the hidden gem it once was.

A Cebuana's Reflection on Uncertainty Amid the Current Political Climate

 As a Cebuana, growing up in the heart of the Visayas, I've always felt a deep connection to my roots, my community, and this beautiful country we call home. The Philippines has always been a place of resilience, culture, and strong values, but lately, there's been a growing sense of uncertainty that lingers in the air—something many of us feel, though we may not always speak about it. It’s an uncertainty about where our country is headed, given its current political state.

For many Cebuanos, we’re known to be tough and pragmatic. We’ve weathered storms—both literal and figurative—throughout history. But even with our resilience, there's no denying that recent political shifts have left many of us feeling uneasy. The promises of progress and development often clash with the realities on the ground. Rising prices, corruption, and a seeming disconnect between the people and those in power have made it difficult to feel secure about the future.

A Culture of Hope, Tested

Traditionally, we Cebuanos are hopeful people. We work hard, take pride in our communities, and hold on to the belief that better days are always ahead. But in the face of divisive politics, where it feels like we’re more polarized than ever, this hope is often tested. Every day, conversations among friends and family shift from daily life to questions of leadership, governance, and what’s next for our country. For many, the answers aren’t clear.

It's not that we expect perfection from our leaders—far from it. We understand that no administration is without its challenges. But it’s the transparency, or lack thereof, that makes us question if we’re really moving forward or if we’re being led down a path of more hardship. Decisions made at the national level feel distant from the realities of life in the provinces. Here in Cebu, where we pride ourselves on local governance and entrepreneurship, we often feel left out of the larger conversation.

Struggling with Mixed Emotions

There are days when I wake up optimistic, reminding myself that Filipinos have survived worse. After all, this is a country of survivors. But on other days, the weight of uncertainty presses harder. The economy’s instability, the threats to press freedom, and the constant political bickering create an environment where it feels like stability is slipping from our grasp. And while we continue to work hard in our jobs, businesses, and homes, there’s a nagging thought that maybe, just maybe, our efforts are being overshadowed by something larger—something we can't control.

It’s this feeling of helplessness that worries me the most. What can an ordinary Cebuana like myself do to influence the bigger picture? Is our voice being heard amidst the noise of political agendas and self-interests? And if not, what future are we building for the next generation?

Despite the uncertainty, one thing that has kept me grounded is my faith. Like many Cebuanos, I turn to prayer and reflection to find peace. The uncertainty may not vanish, but faith gives me strength to continue pushing forward, to keep working hard, and to remain hopeful that things will improve.

As a Cebuana, I also find solace in my community. We Cebuanos are not easily shaken. We will continue to adapt, to find ways to thrive in adversity, and to support one another. There’s comfort in knowing that even if the bigger picture feels uncertain, we can still make a difference in our local lives, through kindness, hard work, and solidarity.

In times like these, it’s easy to disengage from politics altogether, to simply resign ourselves to the belief that nothing will change. But now, more than ever, is the time to stay informed, to voice our concerns, and to hold our leaders accountable. The uncertainty may remain, but our voices—especially from the provinces—are crucial in shaping the direction of this country.

As Cebuanos, we’ve always played a key role in the country’s history, from revolutionaries to present-day trailblazers in business, culture, and governance. Let us not lose sight of our ability to influence change, no matter how small our contribution may seem.

While uncertainty still clouds the horizon, I hold on to the belief that we are not powerless. And as a typical Cebuana, I choose to remain hopeful, grounded in my faith, my community, and the resilient spirit that defines us.

Mactan and Lapu-Lapu City:
